Women’s History Month celebrates equality and collective action

Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, celebrated annually in March, give us an opportunity to honor the remarkable contributions women make in every part of our lives. Both annual designations serve as a unifying moment for people who believe in equality, opportunity, and progress.

This year’s theme for Women’s History Month, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” call us to pause and reflect on how over the past century, women have transformed every sector of society, from our families and workplaces to our schools and communities. They have led movements for civil rights, strengthened economies, built institutions, and shaped public policy. Their resilience and determination have opened doors not only for themselves, but also for the generations that followed.

Here in South Lake County, we see the impact of women every day. Women lead nonprofit organizations that serve our neighbors in need. They mentor young girls, provide counseling and education, build small businesses, and volunteer their time generously. Their contributions strengthen families, expand opportunities, and improve the quality of life across the county and beyond.

Yet many of the challenges identified more than one hundred years ago remain part of today’s conversation. Equitable pay, representation in leadership, access to opportunity, and freedom from discrimination are goals we continue to pursue.

Progress does not happen by accident. It happens when communities invest intentionally in education, mentorship, and leadership development. It happens when generosity aligns with bold vision. When donors support nonprofit programs, community initiatives uplift women and families that help remove barriers and create pathways to success.

When women thrive, families are stronger. When families are stronger, communities are more vibrant and resilient. As we mark this moment in March, I hope it extends all year long. I encourage each of us to consider offering your three T’s: Time, Talent and Treasure.  Whether through mentorship, volunteer service, advocacy, or charitable giving, every action matters.

Together, we can continue building a South Lake County where opportunity is shared, leadership is inclusive, and every woman and girl has the support she needs to reach her full potential.
