What is a Community Foundation?
People often ask, “What is a community foundation?” The short answer: it’s a local hub for generosity and a trusted resource for those in need.
Community foundations differ from private foundations in both structure and focus. Private foundations are often established by a single family or organization to support specific priorities. A community foundation, by contrast, is designed to address a broad range of needs across the entire community.
The Community Foundation of South Lake County is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that brings together donations from individuals and businesses. Working alongside donors and community partners, we identify the most pressing needs and provide support that directly improves lives right here at home.
Many charities focus on a single cause, such as cancer research or animal welfare. A community foundation can remain flexible, adapting to changing circumstances and responding to urgent needs. In recent years, we have provided emergency funding for hurricanes, strengthened food pantries, and helped nonprofits facing unexpected funding shortfalls.
Through grantmaking, we help local nonprofits put food on tables, support children in school, mentor teens, and rebuild homes after crises. There is no shortage of inspiration or quiet heroism in our community. Investing in local students through scholarships builds a lasting repository of knowledge and leadership for the future.
One of the most unique aspects of a community foundation is the opportunity to build endowments. Some gifts are invested so they grow over time, and a portion is distributed each year. This allows the original gift to continue giving year after year, creating a permanent source of support for our community.
We also guide donors in shaping their charitable goals. Through flexible giving options, we can accommodate a variety of assets and philanthropic priorities. Whether giving to a scholarship fund, creating an endowed fund or legacy gift, donors can feel confident their contributions are managed thoughtfully and directed where they can do the most good.
In simple terms, we connect people who care with causes that matter and ensure that South Lake County remains a thriving, resilient, and caring community for generations to come.
Kind regards,
Laura Michalski, Executive Director | Community Foundation of South Lake County
